While operating up in the canopy, a very physically intensive task, it is vital to stay hydrated. In fact, in some cases it is even a legal requirement. Notch came to us with a clear brief: create a compact, minimal system for arborists using single-rope technique, with integrated attachment points and a hydration solution. The result is the Chester DLX: refined, unobtrusive, and built to perform without getting in the way.

While the Chester DLX includes a hydration chamber, it’s not a vest. It’s a climbing system. From the beginning, the goal was to create a tool, not just an accessory. Every element, from the integrated SRT attachment points to the routing for knee ascenders, is designed to support a full climbing setup. This is not just something you wear to carry water. It’s something you wear to climb.
From initial sketches to in-house prototyping, sampling and onto manufacture, the Chester DLX was refined through iterative testing focused on achieving the right fit and function. Prototyping and sampling allowed us to refine fit for users of all shapes and sizes without compromising on functionality. Detailed tech packs captured every specification, from fabric selection to stitching and hardware placement, enabling precise communication with manufacturers.
Through testing with professional arborists, we found that traditional hydration vests often interfere with climbing harnesses, especially at the waist and lower back. To solve this, we designed the Chester DLX to sit higher on the users back with a horizontally oriented hydration bladder, keeping bulk away from critical contact points.
