As part of our on-going partnership with Notch, we set out to enhance the design of traditional ball-shaped retrieval devices, which often snagged in tight tree forks and unions. Together, we developed the Pebble Retrieval System with a slim, propeller-like shape that twists and navigates smoothly through narrow spaces, reducing snagging and improving the reliability of retrieving friction savers and anchors.

Inspired by the smooth, intuitive forms found in nature, the Notch Pebble was designed to feel as effortless in the hand as it is effective in the field. Its distinctive, propeller-like silhouette isn’t just for aesthetics, it guides smooth movement through tight branch unions and prevents snagging, allowing climbers to maintain control in complex canopies. The sculpted form also aids handling, making the Pebble easy to grip, orient, and deploy, even with gloves. Compact yet highly visible, its considered shape helps arborists stay efficient without adding bulk or complexity to their kit.
Purpose-built for versatility, the Notch Pebble simplifies one of the most challenging aspects of canopy work, retrieving ring friction savers and climbing systems. Its innovative twist design allows it to glide cleanly through unions and over branches, reducing the risk of entanglement and stuck gear. Whether working with fixed or adjustable-length friction savers, the Pebble enables controlled, predictable retrieval using a throwline, removing the guesswork and hassle from traditional techniques. A secure girth hitch ensures reliable connection every time, supporting smooth,frustration-free anchor recovery.
The Notch Pebble’s refined design is the result of rapid, hands-on development driven by 3D printing. Early prototypes were put through real-world conditions by arborists, with each iteration revealing subtle improvements in balance, entry angle, and snag resistance. These insights helped evolve the form from a simple concept into a tool that performs seamlessly in the canopy. By combining iterative digital modelling with expert user feedback, we ensured the final product met both the functional demands and practical realities of modern tree work.
